Food and Snow February 7, 2010

I calculate I did about 3 total hours of serious shoveling, digging my car out of the alley….so reward was homemade french fries…which Jen said were “pretty good”, she made some delicious dipping sauces to accompany.  Seriously, I practically shoveled half the alley…my shoulder is killing me.  And no, I didn’t use that shovel in the pic for everything, I am just breaking up some ice with it after I let the salt do some work overnight.

I am learning how to react to snow in my neighborhood, next time I think I’ll stay on the street and dig out from there, because at least the plow comes down that road, it doesn’t do the alleys….oh well, I got some serious work out in!

Well, Jen and I have both started strong, all is well so far with the “lifestyle change”.  It hasn’t been easy of course, but we are both sticking to the south beach diet for the first two weeks.  Lean protien, lots of veggies and NADA carbs.  I even cut the sugar out of my coffee, it’s not so bad(fake sugar bleh!).  We made “breakfast cups” which are a sort of quiche with eggs, turkey bacon and red pepper, from a recipe in the South Beach Diet cookbook(Thanks D’Annas) but they aren’t very good.  Mostly due to the turkey bacon, which is frankly, terrible.  But it has potential and I have some ideas to improve it and even lower the calories, I’ll be sure to post a recipe when I’ve perfected it.

I’m also trying to watch the salt in everything I eat as well.  When I cook, I’m putting a FRACTION of the salt I would normally use.  It means less flavor for sure, but it’s not so the worst.  I’m expecting a really good first couple of weeks, and from then on, 1-2 lbs per week is my goal.

It’s harder avoiding fruit than I thought, every morning I get my coffee at wegmans(i should make it at home, i know, but it doesnt taste as good!) and as you walk in the store, there are all the fruits just staring at you….mmmm apples….never thought I’d say that!

I am glad everyone has jumped in headfirst and really gotten involved.  It is great motivation.  I know I appreciate the support and I am sure Jen does as well.  It isn’t going to be easy, but uh…I hope it is?  Hah

Eating right is the first step, then I’ll start working on the lungs.

OH, and GO RAVENS!!
